A 10-minute home workout for beginners

by FitIt Team · Published February 24, 2026 · 4 min read

You don't need an hour to get a useful session in. Ten minutes of intentional movement can keep you consistent, support your goals and fit into almost any day. Here's a complete beginner-friendly routine you can do in your living room, with zero equipment.

Why 10 minutes still counts

A short session works for three reasons. It's easy to start, which is half the battle. It's easy to repeat, because it doesn't disrupt your day. And over a week, those small sessions add up — a habit of daily movement compounds in ways a single weekly marathon can't. For weight management, regularity matters more than any single session's duration.

Warm-up (about 2 minutes)

Before the main circuit, warm up gently to raise your heart rate and prepare your joints: 30 seconds of marching in place, 30 seconds of shoulder rolls, and a minute of easy, slow squats without weight. The goal is to feel warm, not tired.

The workout: a simple bodyweight circuit

Perform each move for 40 seconds with good form, then rest for 20 seconds. Complete the circuit twice, finishing in about 8 minutes.

  1. Bodyweight squats — feet shoulder-width apart, sit back and down, then push through your heels to stand.
  2. Modified push-ups — knees on the floor, hands slightly wider than your shoulders, lower your chest toward the floor.
  3. Plank hold — forearms on the floor, body in a straight line from head to heels, keep your hips level.
  4. Low-impact cardio — march in place or do gentle stepping jacks, keeping the pace comfortable.

Move at a pace you can sustain. If 40 seconds feels too long, shorten to 30 — form and comfort come before time.

Cool-down

Finish with a minute of easy breathing and light stretching: reach for the sky, touch your toes gently, or roll your shoulders. This helps your body settle back down and sets you up for the next session.

How to progress

Once the full circuit feels comfortable, progress gradually: add a third round, increase work time to 45 or 50 seconds, or reduce the rest to 15 seconds. Alternatively, choose harder versions of the moves — full push-ups instead of modified ones, or slower, deeper squats. Change one thing at a time and keep it repeatable. FitIt's beginner workouts follow this same gradual approach.

Fitting it into a busy day

The beauty of a 10-minute session is that almost everyone can find the time — before breakfast, during a lunch break, or after work. The key is treating it as a real workout, not an optional extra. Set a reminder, put on something comfortable, and start with the warm-up. Once you're moving, finishing takes care of itself. For more short options, browse FitIt's quick workouts.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Short sessions done regularly support fitness, energy and weight-management goals, especially for beginners. Consistency across the week matters more than the length of any one session.
For a beginner, three to five times a week with rest days in between is a realistic target. If you do it daily, keep intensity light and pay attention to how you feel.
Use modified push-ups with your knees on the floor, or push against a wall or low table. Any version that lets you keep good form is the right starting point.

Ten minutes is enough to start.
